Growing berries

One of my favourite things about our garden are the berries.  We grow blueberries, blackberries & strawberries.  I just love watching the shrubs change through the seasons knowing what is in store for us a few months away.

I keep all my edible plants in pots off the ground in garden trolleys.  I really don’t mind the birds and bugs picking away at our fruit and veggies, I have the opinion that if you need more grow more, there should be enough for everybody, and there is, but keeping them elevated may help with this too.

We are lucky in the climate we live in that our strawberries produce all year round, so long as they are kept in the shade and watered in the summer and out in the open in the sun and rain in the winter.  The position of the sun changes from season to season so I just move the garden trolly to the best location.

The blueberries and blackberries are creatures of habit and like to be kept in the shade all the time, with some filtered sun during the winter but they need full shade 100% of the time in the summer, it is often hard to keep them protected from the sun as it becomes very harsh here in WA, but so long as they are well hidden they can tolerate a little with only a few burned leaves as you can see below.

They start to grow new shoots with buds when the cold weather sets in {about now} but it will be months until they are ready to be eaten.  They go into a hibernation period during the worst of the hot weather, so it is lovely to see them start to come to life again now.  I break off any dead growth to give the plant room to grow.  And give them some fertiliser and top the soil up with some new dirt.  Soon there will be an abundance of berries as shown in the photos below that I took last year.  For now I am thrilled to see the plants preparing to produce.

The blueberries and blackberries don’t all come at once, the plant keeps ripening and growing for so long you think it will never end!  I was still picking and eating blueberries in January of this year from the last seasons crop!!

There is nothing better than going outside to pick juicy fresh berries that have been sweetened by the sun.  I can’t wait until the end of the year! X
